Moody Church pastor Erwin Lutzer tells why he wrote his new book, The King is Coming: Preparing to Meet Jesus and what he learned in the process.
I deeply believe that the purpose of prophecy is not to satisfy our curiosity but to change our lives! This is why the Apostle Paul taught new converts details about the return of Jesus—he wanted them to begin their Christian walk with the assurance that Christ could return at any moment. And if He didn’t return in their lifetime, they would lose nothing for when He did come; they would be raised from the dead to enjoy eternity with their King.
I wrote this book with life transformation in mind. Yes, I do talk about current events, about the way everything seems to be pointing to a soon return of Jesus. But I wrote in such a way that if Jesus does not return in the next 20 or 50 years this book will still be relevant. I expound on 10 events that I believe are predicted to take place in the future, regardless of when they happen.
As an author, I myself was changed by writing this book. Of course I’ve known about the general outline of prophetic events for much of my life. But meditating on these events and their reality gripped me. Yes, Jesus actually is going to return; and yes, we will meet Him in the clouds and yes, we shall stand before Him at the judgment seat and yes, we shall attend the marriage supper of the lamb!
What is the take away value of this book for readers? I wrote with the desire to motivate believers to really come to grips with the fact that “it will be worth it all when we see Jesus” and as for skeptics, I wrote in detail about the future terrifying judgments, praying that as they read they might flee to Christ to be protected “from the wrath to come!”
I wrote this book with a sense of urgency, an abiding commitment to the promises of the New Testament, and the words of the angel, “This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Twenty centuries of waiting have not canceled such promises. We can be just as sure that Jesus will return a second time as we are that He came the first time, for remember, His coming in Bethlehem was also at one time “just a prophecy.”
The title of the book sums up the contents, but the subtitle gives the reason I wrote it, The King is Coming—preparing to meet Jesus. If this book helps you to be better prepared for His coming, I for one will be abundantly satisfied.
ABOUT THE BOOK
From panic to punchline, public perception about the return of Christ reveals an alarming lack of understanding of biblical prophecy. In The King is Coming, Pastor Erwin Lutzer lends his knowledgeable, careful handling of a topic that leaves even mature believers and students with difficult questions and unclear conclusions. For the outsiders who doubt end-times prophecy, it’s a wake-up call. For those afraid that they can’t ever know the answers,The King is Coming is a comfort. For anyone willing to take a serious look into the future, it is an encouraging and compelling call to action.
